Generation $21.59 Oddly, there is no listing of instruments in the CD leaflet, but the core group is a trio of electric guitar, bass, and drums, with "guest" flutist Stefano Benini added on several numbers. This is a concept album, what leader Carlo Ceriani calls "a new reading" of "music of [his] generation." Ceriani contributed tunes of his own in addition to ones written by or associated with 1960s icons Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead, King Crimson, and others of that era. The guitarist generally takes all the pieces at a relaxed pace, treating them respectfully as jazz heads, focusing on the essence of the themes, and reminding us just how beautiful some of these classic rock melodies can be. A good example is how Ceriani bares the essence and reflects the simple purity of "Sugar Magnolias." He divests the decade of the '60s of its radical roots, instead focusing on its upbeat, positive elements. Even those who do not remember these songs will regale in these interpretations, which easily stand on their own. Ceriani's compositions fit in unapologetically, with "4x4," for example, the piece composed jointly with Benini, a gorgeous paean ... to what? Hardly the revolutionary 1960s, but nonetheless it is a lovely piece. Ceriani's vision is a conservative one, stripping each piece of any revolutionary fervor and revealing it for its unadorned essence. He performs an important function, essentially resurrecting these songs from their ideological roots, and reintroducing some classics of a bygone era to later generations. Benini adds considerably with his fluid, free-form improvisations, coupled with Ceriani's light, forward-thrusting solos that seem to hold back ever so slightly.
